The road to Låktatjåkko mountain lodge.

Your journey begins in the mountain village of Björkliden, where the gnarled mountain birches still shelter you somewhat from the brisk winds. From here, the trail winds upward, and quite soon you notice how nature changes character. The trees thin out, the air becomes crisper, and suddenly the landscape opens up. You have stepped out onto the bare mountain where the snow cover lies thick across the ground. Make your way past the swimming lake along the groomed trail and continue along the well-traveled trail.

The trail takes you further through Rakkaslàhku, a magnificent U-shaped valley where you are surrounded by mighty mountain walls. Here you ski parallel to the streams, where the cold has frozen them into a slumber until the arrival of the late winter/spring season. After about nine kilometers and at times challenging terrain, the final, steep climb begins. A certain amount of focus is required as the terrain becomes increasingly steep, but with every step you leave the world down below behind you. Take the opportunity to stop and enjoy the endless, white expanses.

And then, suddenly, it reveals itself in the snow-covered landscape, 1,228 meters above sea level: Låktatjåkko Mountain Station. A secure, dark-painted (though often snow-covered up to the ridge poles) little outpost with red window frames that has defied the elements for generations. When you arrive, you leave your skis outside in a snowdrift, step across the threshold, and are met by the scent of old wood, freshly baked waffles, and coffee. You have opened the door to something greater. The views stretching for miles across the mountain peaks will take your breath away—and give you a deep, intense feeling of being Forever Free.
